Paper Bird is a small game. We built it to be played, not to collect data. Here is exactly what happens to your information.

Who controls your data

The controller of your data is the developer of Paper Bird, reachable at hello@getpaperbird.com.

What stays on your device

Your saved progress lives only on your device; we keep no copy of it on any server: your best score, today's daily challenge best, lifetime distance, your streak, earned stamps, selected plane, rival name and score, settings, the date you last claimed a free life, and app preferences. Deleting Paper Bird deletes all of this data. Nothing you type into the game (like a rival's name) is sent anywhere. Separately, the stats of each run you play are sent to Firebase Analytics, subject to the consent choices described under Analytics below.

Analytics

In production builds, Paper Bird uses Firebase Analytics (Google) to track gameplay events so we can see which parts of the game work and which don't. These events carry a Firebase App Instance ID (a random identifier created when you install the app), not your name, email, contacts or precise location. Advertising ID collection is disabled. Firebase Analytics is not used in development or preview builds.

Events tracked include when you start and finish a run, with these stats for each finished run: your score, the distance flown, the run length (time spent flying), how the run ended (hitting an obstacle, hitting the ground, or quitting from the pause menu), the mode (free play or daily challenge), the difficulty, how many continues you used, and whether the run was a new best. We also track when you continue using a free life or a watched ad (with the cost and your score at that moment), when you declined a continue offer, when an error occurred, when you earned a stamp, when you changed a setting, and when you shared your run. These gameplay stats are not linked to your name or contact details; they are sent to Firebase so we can tune difficulty and spot bugs. Firebase also automatically logs session starts, app updates, your device's OS, app version, language, and timezone.

Outside the European Union, United Kingdom, and Switzerland, analytics is turned on by default when you play, and there is no in-app opt-out button. Depending on where you live, you may see a consent or privacy choices message from Google; if so, you can change your selections in Settings > Privacy options. On iOS, you can also manage app tracking in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. On Android, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in device settings.

In the European Union, United Kingdom, and Switzerland, analytics data is collected only after you consent via the consent message shown on your first launch. You can change your choice in the game's Settings > Privacy options.

Analytics data is retained by Firebase according to the retention setting configured in the Google Firebase console (you can find details at Firebase data retention). If you send us a support message, we keep that message and your email address so we can answer you.

Rewarded ads

Paper Bird offers an optional rewarded video to earn an extra life during gameplay. Ads are served by Google AdMob. Google may collect the advertising identifier (on iOS only if you allow tracking in Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt; Android advertising ID), your IP address, device information and ad interactions.

In the European Union, United Kingdom, and Switzerland, a Google consent message is shown when you first play. If you consent, ads may be personalised. If you do not consent, you may see limited ads. This message is re-shown each time you launch the app until you answer it. You can change your choice in the game's Settings > Privacy options.

Outside those regions, ads may be personalised by default, subject to your device settings (iOS: App Tracking Transparency, Android: advertising ID settings).

If no ad is available (no network, ad not loaded, or no inventory), you simply cannot use that particular ad to continue a run; the free daily life still works. You can reset or limit your advertising identifier in your phone's settings. The game works fully without ever watching an ad.

Daily challenge

When you play the daily challenge, the puzzle is generated on your device from today's date — no server and no leaderboard. Your daily best is saved on your device, and the stats of each daily run are sent to Firebase Analytics the same way as free-play runs (see Analytics above), subject to the same consent choices.

Children

Paper Bird is not directed at children under 13. Advertisements shown in the game are limited to content rated PG or less. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.

Your choices

You can change your ad and analytics consent in the game's Settings > Privacy options (shown where it applies, and only when your region requires it). On iOS, you can also manage app tracking in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. On Android, reset or delete your advertising ID in device settings.

All on-device data is deleted when you uninstall the app. Your analytics and ad data is identified only by a random Firebase App Instance ID created when you install Paper Bird. When you uninstall the app, that identifier is reset, and the old data eventually expires and is deleted by Firebase. To request access to, deletion of, or more information about the data associated with your Firebase App Instance ID, email us and we will help you where we can.

GDPR and other privacy laws: If you live in the European Union, United Kingdom, Switzerland, or other jurisdiction with similar protections, you have the right to access, rectify, or request deletion of your data; to withdraw your consent to processing; to object to processing; and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Contact us to exercise these rights.

Crash and error reporting

Paper Bird uses Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.) to report app crashes and errors so we can fix them. Crash and error reports are sent under our legitimate interest in keeping the app working, not based on consent. Sentry receives the error message, stack trace, app version, OS version, device model, locale, timezone, device memory, timestamp, and recent in-app activity (breadcrumbs). Sentry is not configured to attach your name, email, or other personal data. Sentry receives your IP address as part of sending a report; we don't use it to identify you.

Sentry keeps crash reports for a limited period (no longer than 90 days).

Third parties and data transfers

Paper Bird uses Google (Firebase Analytics and Google AdMob) and Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.) to provide features described above. Each third party operates under its own terms and privacy policy:

Google may transfer, store, and process your data in the United States and other countries. Sentry (a US company) stores PaperBird crash reports in the European Union, but may access them from the United States under its data-processing agreement. These transfers are protected by standard contractual clauses and other mechanisms under data protection law.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Check back here for updates.
